A meaningful gift for teenagers • Financial skills for life • Support their journey to independence • Practical money knowledge for the real world • Build confidence with saving, spending and investing   •

Wish someone had taught you more about money and the financial system?

Marshmallow Money Australia books are designed to teach teens about managing money in the Australian context.

The books connect the dots between financial concepts, economic concepts and consumer rights, and highlight trusted sources of information and where to go to get help.

But knowledge alone doesn't guarantee good financial decisions.

The books also explain how emotions, habits, social norms and marketing influence our decisions.

You don't need to be a financial expert to help a young person become more confident with money.

Marshmallow Money is a two-step system that combines easy-to-read books and educator resource packs to build conceptual understanding and faciliate content personalisation.

They are evidence-informed resources designed by financial literacy researcher Dr Tracey West (PhD).

What others say about Marshmallow Money resources

"As a home educator, finding financial literacy resources that actually help connect math to the real-world was exhausting. Tracey's guide and books completely changed our approach to math. Highly recommend!" - Nicole T., Homeschool parent (NSW)

"My 14-year-old was constantly begging for in-game purchases on his tablet. After reading the Spending book, he voluntarily started a 'goal jar' for a skateboard instead. This is the first money tool that actually clicked with him. I think we have to practice physical money before they move to digital" - David K., Dad of two (Melbourne)

"Using the math curriculum guide and the Marshmallow books together, I have been able to extend the real-world applications of financial math in the classroom. The students are really loving it. These resources bridge the critical gap between abstract mathematical formulas and real-world decision-making" - Mr Peterson, Head of Mathematics (WA)

The resources are designed as a developmental learning journey, helping teens to build financial understanding in age-appropriate stages.

1Financial Foundations

Students are introduced to core money concepts such as needs and wants, goal setting, saving, spending, delayed gratification, consumer choices, budgeting, taxation, and basic financial decision-making. At this level, the focus is on building confidence, curiosity, and positive money habits.

Books include Saving, Spending and Tax.

2Financial Empowerment

Students begin exploring more complex financial systems, including the financial system, investing, superannuation, risk and insurance, scams, economic decision-making, and understanding how personal choices can influence long-term financial wellbeing. At this stage, learners are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and connect money decisions with real-life situations.

Books include Superannuation and Investing.

3Financial Independence

Students engage with applied financial decision-making such as buying a car, buying a property, starting work and paying bills. This level helps young people prepare for adult financial responsibilities and future decision-making.

The first book in this series is Buying a Car.
